Problems like sun damage and the effects of aging can really take a toll on your skin. If you are currently dealing with sunspots, blemishes, wrinkles, or hyperpigmentation, you should consider chemical peels. A simple application of a chemical solution can do wonders for your skin by removing some of the outer skin layer to encourage the formation of newer, healthier skin.
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is a medical-grade solution that consists of some type of chemical suspended within a solution that we apply to your skin to remove damaged skin tissue. Your body responds to this controlled injury by replacing old skin tissue with fresh collagen to reduce common signs of aging and prolonged sun exposure. There are three basic forms of chemical peels: Light, medium, and deep.
Light Chemical Peels
A light peel is most appropriate for those who have very light scars, wrinkles, or dull skin tone. We use a gentle acid to remove the build up of skin cells and cellular debris that is dulling your complexion. Think of a light peel as a type of mild exfoliation or sanding away of the upper skin layer.
Medium Chemical Peels
A medium peel is a stronger form of treatment that helps with light to moderate wrinkles, scars, and blemishes. It typically involves the use of a chemical called TCA to remove a part of the epidermis skin layer to encourage the formation of newer, more youthful skin that is smoother and has fewer imperfections. Medium peels can require some downtime as the old skin peels away.
Deep Chemical Peels
Representing the strongest form of peel available, a deep chemical peel usually involves the application of a strong acid solution containing acids like phenol or carbolic acid to peel away the epidermis and some of the dermis skin layers. If you are prepared to set aside a few weeks of downtime while your skin remodels itself, a deep peel provides the strongest form of treatment available for the correction of deep scars, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and stretch marks.
What to Expect
There are some differences depending upon the type of peel that you undergo, but generally the process involves prepping your skin with a degreaser to remove any remaining oils on the surface of your skin. We then apply the chemical solution to your skin, which remains there for a few minutes. You may experience some mild stinging or tingling that will subside in a few minutes.
