Have you been experiencing skin problems like uneven pigmentation, scars, or signs of aging like lines and wrinkles? Chemical peels can make a tremendous difference in the appearance of your skin. They can improve lines and wrinkles, smooth texture, lift pigment, brighten, and enhance firmness and hydration.
What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a type of skin rejuvenation treatment involving the application of a chemical solution containing various ingredients designed to peel away portions of the upper skin layer to reveal new skin underneath.
There are three main types of medical-grade chemical peels, depending upon your unique skin condition: superficial, medium, and deep.
Superficial Chemical Peels
As the name suggests, superficial chemical peels are appropriate if you require treatment for conditions like acne scars, enlarged pores, or skin dullness. This treatment usually involves the application of a chemical solution containing lactic, glycolic, or salicylic acid. In spite of the images they may conjure up, these types of acids are actually quite mild in nature. They only peel away inorganic portions of skin that block its natural radiance.
The superficial chemical peel does not involve any sedation or downtime. However, since it is an extremely gentle form of treatment, you may require multiple applications for some skin conditions.
Medium Chemical Peels
This treatment is used for more severe sun damage, deeper lines and wrinkles, and enlarged pores. It can be combined with glycolic acid to offer a brightening effect. Medium chemical peels often require no sedation or downtime.
Deep Chemical Peels
The deep peel utilizes phenol or high-strength TCA to enhance the appearance of deep wrinkles, severe sun damage, skin laxity, and scars. Anesthesia is often required, and the downtime can be significant. If you have sufficient time set aside for the downtime, the deep chemical peel offers the most dramatic results available for skin rejuvenation.
Preparation
Some preparation will help. You should take care to remain hydrated prior to your chemical peel treatment. This is because the peel can dry your skin, make it more sensitive and vulnerable to a negative reaction. Do drink lots of water in the days before your treatment and avoid strenuous physical activity or sun exposure in Owensboro that can cause dehydrating heat.
You should also maintain your normal skin care regimen at home. Continue to moisturize your skin. This is also not a good time to experiment with any new type of skin care products. The chemical peel treatment will be something of a shock to your skin, so take good care of it in the days leading up to your procedure.
